Singapore

Latham’s Asia offices work as one team, bringing together elite capabilities across practices and industries, native language and cultural knowledge, and on-the-ground support throughout the region.

Office Overview

Serving clients from the major financial, commercial, and regulatory hubs of Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo — we seamlessly integrate through Latham’s global platform to deliver sophisticated counsel and representation to clients on their most complex and consequential matters in Asia and around the world.

With a seasoned understanding of Asia’s local and regional markets, we bridge jurisdictions, languages, time zones, and business cultures for clients operating anywhere in the region. We represent dynamic private equity funds, financial institutions, and direct lenders, multinational and government-linked corporations, as well as emerging companies active in Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Latham’s Asia-based lawyers rank among the very top practitioners in the region. We regularly advise on the most transformative capital markets offerings, private equity, and M&A transactions in every major jurisdiction. We guide multinationals through the increasingly complex web of anti-money laundering, sanctions, and export controls regimes. We represent sponsors and lenders in the region’s landmark project finance matters and infrastructure projects. And increasingly, we advise on the emerging ESG and sustainability issues affecting companies with operations in Asia.

Lauded as the “Most Innovative Firm in the Asia-Pacific” by the Financial Times, our diverse Asia team connects clients in the financial services, infrastructure, energy, media, and technology industries to world-class legal services in the region and to the full complement of Latham lawyers around the globe.

Giving Back

As one of the world’s largest pro bono providers, Latham takes on matters in nearly every area of public interest law. In Asia, our pro bono efforts include supporting asylum seekers, serving the elderly, and advocating for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Pro Bono & Public Service

The Singapore office has a strong commitment to serving the community and has been at the forefront of building and promoting a pro bono culture in Singapore. The office has taken on a leadership position on the Joint International Pro Bono Committee, which was established to match interested Singapore and international law practices with cross-border pro bono opportunities involving economic and social development in emerging markets. The membership of the committee is made up of representatives from most of the international and local law firms in Singapore and is an important forum for the development of pro bono initiatives in Singapore.

Latham's support for the Law Society of Singapore’s pro bono initiatives was honored with the “Friend of the Law Society” award. The firm has continued its involvement in the Law Society’s Criminal Legal Aid Scheme prison interview program and has also recently been providing corporate governance advice to Impact Investment Exchange Asia (IIX), which aims to be Asia’s first social stock exchange and Princeton-in-Asia (PiA), a non-profit organization that places recent college graduates in year-long service-orientated fellowship jobs in 17 different countries throughout Asia.

Latham lawyers in Singapore completed pro bono work with key partner organizations TrustLaw and Pro Bono Services Office of the Law Society of Singapore in areas such as anti-human trafficking and human rights, nonprofits and NGOs, intellectual property and licensing, corporate and regulatory, and social entrepreneurship.

According to the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s third annual TrustLaw Index of Pro Bono, Latham ranks fourth in the provision of pro bono services in Singapore. Latham was awarded "Global Pro Bono Deal of the Year" by The American Lawyer Global Legal Awards 2017 for its work on Shining a Light On Rural India: Advising Mera Gao Power.

Latham & Watkins earns recognition for advising on three groundbreaking “Deals of the Year” in FinanceAsia’s 2017 Achievement Awards. The awards highlight innovative transactions in the region and aim to recognize “excellence in bringing corporates and investors together and in developing Asia’s capital markets.”
