Latham & Watkins is pleased to announce that Rich Trobman has been elected Chair and Managing Partner, effective immediately.
Trobman is indisputably one of the leading high yield practitioners in Europe. His practice includes representing investment banking firms, private equity firms, and companies in public and private offerings of securities, restructurings, bridge loans, and merger and acquisition transactions, with a particular emphasis on issuances of debt securities and leveraged transactions. He was elected Vice Chair of the firm in 2017 after serving as a member of the Executive Committee for three years. Trobman joined Latham in 1991 as an associate in Los Angeles, transferred to New York in 1993, and has been based in the London office since 2000; he was elected to the partnership the same year.
He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Local Department Chair for the Corporate Department in the London office (2008 – 2014), as well as on the Women Enriching Business (WEB) Committee (2015 – 2017), Associates Committee (2006 – 2008), and Ethics Committee (2001 – 2007), among other leadership roles.
Ora Fisher, Vice Chair of Latham & Watkins, said: “I’ve known Rich for many years, and I have worked with him on strategic projects and in firm leadership. I’ve seen his many talents, deep commitment, and sound judgment firsthand. In every situation, he radiates calm and a sense of equanimity — characteristics that will serve him well as he leads our firm into the future.”
“Over the years, he has played instrumental roles at the firm, bringing bold thinking and strategic insight. Perhaps most important of all, Rich deeply understands our culture. With his guidance, clear vision, and drive, we will continue to focus on unlocking the full potential of the global platform to derive even greater value for our clients,” added Fisher.
Rich Trobman said: “I am honored to serve the firm as Chair and Managing Partner. This is an exciting time in the legal industry, and we are committed to accelerating growth and pursuing innovation in the service of our clients.”
“I am also deeply humbled to be elected Chair, and I look forward to working with the many talented leaders and partners across the firm to continue our success. The strength of our firm rests on a shared commitment to excellence, an unrelenting focus on delivering exceptional client service, a culture of entrepreneurism, and a passion for innovation. These values got us to where we are today, and they ensure that we will continue to lead the industry,” said Trobman.
Trobman succeeds Bill Voge as the firm’s previously elected Chair and Managing Partner. Trobman said: “We thank Bill for his many contributions to our firm. I will endeavor to build upon our accomplishments and to lead the firm as we strive to meet the challenges of the ever-evolving dynamics of the market.”
Sean Berkowitz, Chair of the Succession Committee, commented: “The extraordinary track records of all of the candidates testifies to the depth of talent at the firm. The succession process exemplified our values of inclusion, collegiality, and respect, and I’m proud of my partners and our firm.
LeeAnn Black, Chief Operating Officer, added: “I’ve known Rich since his early years in the New York office and have collaborated with him on numerous initiatives, and he has always been an exceptional role model, outstanding mentor, and a forward thinker with amazing energy, intuition, and ideas. He is a motivational leader who brings both humility and tenacity to all that he does, and I look forward to continuing to work with him to deliver on the firm’s long-term strategic goals.”
In 2017, Latham & Watkins increased its revenue to $3.06 billion, marking a record year for the firm and the eighth straight year of revenue growth. “This growth is due to our commitment to client service and teamwork, as well as our disciplined focus on building high-end practices. We will continue to deliver value and creative legal solutions for our clients around the world,” said Trobman.
Trobman received his JD from Northwestern University School of Law in 1991 and his BA from Bucknell University in 1988.
